Halloween is one of the most exciting times of year for many people. Children love getting dressed up to try and get treats from their neighbours, while many adults throw Halloween parties and drink with their friends all night. One of the best things about Halloween is dressing up as your favourite character, and if you want to take the occasion to the next level, throw a gothic-themed party and invite all your friends.
- Buy accessories to set the scene
With some scary gothic accessories, you can turn your house into a haunted castle within minutes. You don’t even have to spend much money or get lots of items to help create this look – just get some dust sheets to throw over your furniture, dim the lights, add a few gothic candles to the room and fill up empty space with pumpkins (carve them for an extra scary atmosphere). If you want to go the extra mile, buy stuffed animals such as owls or cats and add some Victorian photographs to the room. Fake cobwebs are a favourite when decorating any room for a Halloween party.
- Ask everybody to come in fancy dress
This is something which everybody will probably expect anyway, but make sure that people know you’re having a gothic party. You might want to ask them to come in Victorian outfits if this is the theme you’re going for, or if you want to play a game with staged murders or other events, you could create a group chat and get everybody to decide what they want to dress as beforehand. You could play real life Cluedo or have a ghost hunt in your home or another venue. If there’s no particularly theme, ask everybody to come in any gothic outfit they like. You can buy gothic clothing in Australia from many fancy dress stores or online gothic clothes shops.
- Stock up on alcohol
No Halloween party is complete without a healthy amount of alcohol! Find out how to make gothic cocktails using dark drinks such as rum or black Sambuca. Coca-cola and blackcurrant drinks are also good for adding dark colours to your drinks. You can also come up with some gothic drinking games, such as drinking a shot each time somebody mentions a certain word or every time you hear a spooky noise.
- Bake creepy cakes and snacks
There are loads of Halloween recipes that you can make use of for your gothic party. You can bake a regular cake and then cut it into shapes such as fingers or eyeballs before you ice and decorate them. If you don’t have much time, make some cookies and ice them with black spider shapes or the outline of black cats. Make use of red icing sugar mixed with water to create a substance that looks like blood. You can decorate the sweet treats with drops of red icing to make the snacks even more creepy.
